eco-friendly papers & packaging
Our papers are tree-free, made from recovered cotton from the textile industry that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Cotton doesn't require as much bleaching as tree-made papers, which means fewer chemicals are used. It also requires less water processing and far less energy to make. Our papers are archival, acid-free, recyclable, biodegradable, and elemental chlorine free (which means that pollution prevention technology is used to eliminate toxic substances in mill waste water, and the bleaching agent is less harmful to the environment).
If you'd like to take things a step further, handmade papers are the most environmentally friendly option we offer. The handmade paper process uses much less energy, as it's made by hand through a small company or individual, instead of a conventional paper mill.
When a shipment of supplies or prints arrives at our studio, we take the packaging materials to a local mail shop to be reused. Any material that can't be reused is recycled. Empty boxes of envelopes are used to hold samples of previous orders, or given to a local florist to use for flower deliveries. Our small invitation boxes, which keep your order safe inside its outer shipping box, are made from 35-45% recycled content, and our tissue paper is made from 100% recycled fibers.
One of our go-to letterpress printers uses only vegetable-oil based and low-VOC inks, and low-VOC citrus-based solvents. They recycle their photo chemistry, film, and printing plates, and compost suitable materials.
Scrap paper is used around our studio for note taking, and any excess is donated to art teachers or a local reuse warehouse, or recycled.
